Friday, September 18, 2009 CANCELLED: The American Arts & Crafts Movement
The movement that came to be called “Arts & Crafts” originated in England with the work of William Morris and his workshop.
Morris’ passion was social reform through beauty in everyday life.
He espoused bringing artistic quality and style into the objects of the home, from wallpaper to furniture.
The American Arts & Crafts movement adopted these ideals.
As stated by architect Charles Greene “I seek till I find what is truly useful, and then I try to make it beautiful.”
This talk will explore the social context of the Arts & Crafts Movement in America, and view examples of the work of the designers and architects who contributed to it.
Friday, February 26, 2010: American Artists in Europe
After the American Civil War, young artists, most from Northern states where the economy had flourished, flocked to Europe to study in the great centers of France, Germany, Italy, and England.
The greatest number circled around Paris, as individuals and in art colonies they formed for mutual education.
Many of the well-known names of later 19th century American art can be found among the lists of students or in private studios taken by established artists, names like Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer.
A number of expatriates ended up calling Europe home, most notably John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, and James McNeil Whistler.
The influences of European experiences can be seen in their best known art, much of which now resides in American museums.
